A book does not always contain a memory, but a memory can always become
When a book represents what has happened,
even if the events have been interpreted or reinterpreted it always represents a memory.
This memory can be transferred to other people when they enter the world of the book,

For the first time, The Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy and ‘t Japans Cultureel Centrum Amsterdam will hold a joint exhibition of two up-and-coming artists from Japan & the Netherlands, Erika Kobayashi & The Future.
Erika Kobayashi is a Tokyo-based writer/comic artist, who has been highly praised and nominated famous Japanese literary prizes. The Future is young artists unit by Klara van Duijkeren and Vincent Schipper, based in Amsterdam, whose unique activities as experimental publisher & printer are attracts people’s attention.
The common keywords of these two artists are ‘memories’ and ‘book’. In this exhibition, they will create unique collaboration works based on Erika Kobayashi’s book Your dear Kitty.
The exhibition will consist of art installation and book-making performance.
[CONCEPT & AIM]
The idea of memory is one of the overarching themes explored by Tokyo-based Erika Kobayashi in her work-especially in her book Your Dear Kitty * (her personal exploration of the diary of Anne Frank and her father). In her case the diary is the main vessel to transport people from future generations into a world that has passed.
The Future is a research based, experimental publisher and printer based in Amsterdam. They see paper and ink as one of the truest means of preserving memories, ideas and creating histories.
For this exhibition, the curator team brought these two artists together to make collaborative works under their common theme, ‘memory’ and ‘book’. By using this opportunity, the works of Erika Kobayashi will be presented to a wider public, focusing on her work produced for the book Your Dear Kitty. The Future will co-create a live performance and the exhibition. Moreover The Future will publish a special limited edition version of her book for this exhibition.
*Your Dear Kitty…Erika Kobayashi’s book published in Japan in 2011. It is a journal of a trip, which Kobayashi made in 2009. In this trip, she followed Anne Frank’s life backwards with three diaries. One is of Anne Frank, one is of her father of wartime, and her own. Throughout the trip, Kobayashi made many drawings and texts, based on her consideration about the choices people made and hope.
[THE EXHIBITON]
Exhibitions will be held at two venues, The Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy and ‘t Japans Cultureel Centrum.
At The Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy, the art & sound installation by Erika Kobayashi and The Future will be exhibited, focising on the Kobayashi’s illustrations, drawings from her book Your Dear Kitty, as well as the research working towards her book.
At ‘t Japans Cultureel Centrum, Erika Kobayashi’s video works from Your Dear Kitty will be displayed. These two venues will be connected by internet.“Your Dear Kitty, The Book of Memories”

Een boek beslaat niet altijd een herinnering, maar een herinnering kan altijd een boek worden. Wanneer een boek vertegenwoordigt wat er is gebeurd, ook wanneer de gebeurtenissen herhaaldelijk zijn geinterpreteerd, vertegenwoordigt het altijd de herinnering aan iets. Deze herinnering kan worden overgebracht aan andere mensen wanneer zij de wereld van het boek betreden.

Voor de eerste keer houden de Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy en ‘t Japans Cultureel Centrum Amsterdam een gecombineerde expositie van twee opkomende artiesten uit Japan en Nederland; Erika Kobayashi en The Future. Erika Kobayashi is een hoog geprezen schrijfster/striptekenares gevestigd in Tokyo met verscheidene nominaties voor Japanse literatuurprijzen op haar naam. The Future is een experimentele uitgeverij en drukkerij, opgericht door Klara van Duijkeren en Vincent Schipper, wiens bijzondere activiteiten de publieke aandacht hebben getrokken. The Future is gevestigd in Amsterdam.
Wat deze artiesten gemeen hebben zijn de sleutelwoorden ‘herinneringen’ en ‘boeken’. In deze expositie zal een uniek werk gecreëerd worden op basis van Erika Kobayashi’s boek Your Dear Kitty (2011). De expositie zal bestaan uit kunstintallaties en tijdens de opening wordt ter plekke het boek afgemaakt.
[Concept en doel]
Het idee van herinnering is één van de overheersende thema’s in het werk van Erika Kobayashi. Dit komt in het bijzonder naar voren in haar boek Your Dear Kitty (haar persoonlijke verkenning van Anne Frank’s dagboek en het dagboek van haar vader). In dit werk dient het dagboek als het belangrijkste voertuig dat mensen verplaatst uit toekomstige generaties naar een wereld die reeds is gepasseerd.
The Future ziet papier en inkt als één van de oprechtste media om herinneringen en ideëen te conserveren en geschiedenissen te creëren.
Het curator team heeft voor deze expositie deze twee artiesten bij elkaar gebracht om collaboratief werk te creëren met hun gezamenlijke thema’s ‘herinneringen’ en ‘boek’. Door gebruik te maken van deze kans, zal het werk van Erika Kobayashi aan een groter publiek worden gepresenteerd. The Future zal een live performance én de publicatie verzorgen.
*Your Dear Kitty, Erika Kobayashi’s book gepubliceerd in Japan in 2011, is het verslag van een reis die zij maakte in 2009. Tijdens deze reis volgde zij Anne Frank’s leven aan de hand van drie dagboeken. Eén is van Anne Frank, één is van haar vader en één is van haar zelf. Gedurende de reis maakte Kobayashi vele tekeningen en notities.
[De expositie]
De exposities worden gehouden op twee locaties. Het Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy en ‘t Japans Cultureel Centrum.
In het Llyod Hotel & Cultural Embassy worden de kunst en geluid installaties van Erika Kobayashi & The Future tentoongesteld. De focus ligt hierbij op Kobayashi’s illustraties en tekeningen uit haar boek Your Dear Kitty en op het onderzoek dat hier aan vooraf ging.
Bij ‘t Japans Cultureel Centrum worden de video werken van Erika Kobayashi’s Your Dear Kitty vertoont. Verder worden deze twee locaties verbonden door middel van het internet.

I had two diaries with me.
One by Anne Frank, which she wrote at the age of 13 to 15, and the other by my father, written during and after the war at the age of 16 to 17.
They were born in the same year, in different countries. In the spring of 2009 my father turned 80, just as Anne would have. I decided to set out on a journey with these two diaries.
At the same time, I started my own diary in a brand new notebook, beginning with these words: ‘Your Dear Kitty,’
Ik had twee dagboeken bij me.
Een is van Anne Frank, zij schreef het in de leeftijd van 13 tot 15 jaar. Het andere dagboek is van mijn vader, geschreven toen hij 16 en 17 jaar was.
Zij zijn geboren in het zelfde jaar, in verschillende landen. In de lente van 2009 besloot ik met deze twee dagboeken op reis te gaan. Anne zou 80 jaar zijn geworden, mijn vader vierde zijn tachtigste verjaardag..
Toen ik vertrok begon ik een eigen dagboek in een nieuw, ongeschreven notitieboek. met de eerste worden: ‘Jouw Lieve Kitty,’

Following in the footsteps of Anne Frank, I set out on a journey from March 30 to April 2009.
Bergen-Belsen – Auschwitz – Auschwitz-Birkenau – Westerbork – Amsterdam – Frankfurt am Main.
Tracing back from her death to her birthplace, I read through each diary in different places and then wrote into my own.
Om de sporen van Anne Frank te volgen ga ik van 30 maart tot april 2009 op reis.

Ik begin de zoektocht op de plek waar zij stierf en eindig in haar geboorteplaats. Op de verschillende plekken lees ik de dagboeken en schrijf ik in die van mij.
