トリニティ。父と子と精霊。キリスト教の三位一体を表す言葉。
そしてそれは、アメリカ、ニューメキシコ州、ホワイトサンズ・ミサイル実験場の中にある、世界ではじめての原爆実験が行われた場所の名でもある。
なぜ、その場所が、その名で呼ばれることになったのかは、諸説あって定かではない。
それは、ロスアラモスの近くにあるインディアンたちも寄りつかない魔の山の名に由来しているだとか、原子爆弾がまさにちょうど三個（実験のためのガジェット、広島に投下されたリトルボーイ、長崎に投下されたファットマン）完成されようとしていたからだとか。
アメリカの原爆開発計画、マンハッタン計画を率いた科学者ロバート・オッペンハイマーも後年、それを思い出そうとするが、やっぱりそれをはっきりとは思い出せない。
しかし確か、その名を名づけた時、ジョン・ダンの詩が頭のなかにあった、とだけロバートは答える。
私の心を叩き割ってください、三位一体の神よ。これまで、
軽く打ち、息をかけ、照らして、私を直そうとされたが、
今度は、起き上がり立っていられるように、私を倒して、
力一杯、壊し、吹き飛ばし、焼いて、造りかえて下さい。

Trinity: Father, Son, Holy Ghost. The Christian term for the threefold nature of God.
The word is also a name: the name of the site where the first atomic bomb experiments took place at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, U.S.A.
No one knows quite how this place got its name.
Perhaps it was named after a nearby mountain said to be so evil it was shunned by even the Native Americans. Or perhaps it simply refers to the threefold experiment about to take place—an experiment that began there with the detonation of the first atomic bomb, the Gadget, and that continued with Little Boy, which was dropped on Hiroshima, and that concluded with Fat Man, which was dropped on Nagasaki.
Years later, J. Robert Oppenheimer, the nuclear physicist who directed the Manhattan Project and oversaw nuclear weapons development in the U.S., tried to recall the reason for the name, but in the end, was unable to remember it clearly.
Still, though, he said, I’m sure I had that poem by John Donne somewhere in the back of my mind.
