目に見えないもの、記憶や史実に基づいたリサーチを重ね作品を制作してきた小林。近年は、大丸有周辺エリアにおける風船爆弾にまつわる出来事や人をリサーチし小説「女の子たち風船爆弾をつくる」（文藝春秋刊）を書き上げました。語られなかった声を掬い上げるように、手渡された記憶や言葉を幾人もの「わたし」が物語を紡ぎます。今回のインスタレーション作品では、旧八重洲ビルヂングの様々な部材（レリーフや窓ガラスなど）が三菱地所に保管されていたことを始まりとしています。このタイミングで作品化をしなければ、受け継がれることがなかった歴史を小林の視点で新たな形に変換させ、発表します。
Kobayashi’s practice is rooted in meticulous research into the invisible—memory and overlooked historical fact—and transforms those findings into art.
Most recently she investigated the stories and individuals connected to World War II and Paper Balloon Bomb making in the Daimaruyū (Marunouchi-Ōtemachi-Yurakuchō) district of central Tokyo, a process that culminated in her novel “Girls, Making Paper Balloon Bombs” (Bungeishunju).
Like scooping up unheard voices, multiple iterations of “I” weave the memories and words that have been handed down into a single narrative.
The point of departure for the new installation is a cache of architectural fragments—reliefs, window panes and other elements—from the former Yaesu Building, preserved for decades by Mitsubishi Estate. By seizing this moment—before those traces could be lost—Kobayashi reimagines their history through her own lens and reveals it in a new form.
